>In The Beginning…

>In the beginning… of the year that is, I made a promise to myself that I would read through the entire Old Testament this year (and next, if it takes me that long!). So far, I am only part way through Leviticus and I’ve come to realize two very specific things.

First, and probably most obviously, there is a LOT of repetition. As a parent, this strikes me for two reasons. First, that maybe it’s not just earthly parents who wonder if their children are deaf or if they simply have selective hearing. Secondly, I wonder if maybe He knows that just because we hear and obey the first time doesn’t mean that we don’t need constant reminding of what His rules and expectations are.

Moving on, lots of people think, “Eeeww, the Old Testament. Boring!” or, “That’s the part with the ‘mean God’ right?”. So far, it’s not been boring to me. Mostly because it’s new reading. As for God being mean, I’ve not seen that yet either. Yes, I know the flood story and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and others are coming in due time. Part of me wonders though… if things hadn’t gotten so out of hand would these events have even taken place?

There’s no possible way for me to speculate an answer to that question. But if I consider that God sent His Son as the perfect sin sacrifice, I can say without hesitation that he’s certainly not and was never a “mean God”. It’s almost like he was a parent to a (very) unruly child and had to use some extreme measures to reprimand their behavior.

All in all, I can say that I’m learning a lot as I work my way through the Old Testament and I’m interested to know what happens next.
